well... looks like I have another installation to do in the next couple of weeks. I am considering either a 1642 Ai or a Soundcraft Si compact 16 as the mixer will be mounted in a rack in the wall back stage... it's a small upscale lounge. I'll be putting in some nice QSC speakers/subs to go with this. Having the mixer back stage, the iPad remote capabilities are essential to the successful daily operation of this system as well as having scene presets so average Joe can call up a preset and it's there!

My concern is the iPad and locking up issues with the Ai mixers I keep seeing in these forums. I have a really good reputation and only do high quality work and all my clients are super happy with what I recommend and install and set up. I simply cannot put something into a system that will fail or be a problem. It has to work every time every day, and this is not rocket science so it has to be simple.

what I am wondering is if Presonus has made any headway into solving these issues on the Ai series. I have a few of the older versions and so far they seem to be stable and only a few glitches in my current Studio Live inventory. I did not buy a 2442 Ai when it first came out... I passed on it and just got an older version for another venue... I was not wanting to be the first on the block and have all the problems... it's been awhile now and I am seeing a lot of frustrated users here on this forum, all having the same and related issues.

right now I am still on the other side of the fence with the Ai series... not wanting to deal with these type of issues. I really like the studio live consoles and they are easy to use but if they are problem prone I don't even want to consider them until these problems are solved.

The Soundcraft seems to be a more professional solution with many more pro features and options... But! the studio live are more simpler and for some installations that is key to making it work best... They are both great consoles.
I like to have options , but those options need to be reliable solutions and not a Pandora's box of problems and issues.

so ... being the Presonus fan-boy that I am... I'm conflicted... javascript:emoticon('');

Has anyone had connection issues that didn't turn out to be something to do with their setup? I'm just curious...

well, regardless the basic mixer running with no PC and just the iPad with a dongle... I keep seeing these issues... I have an older 1642 installed with an apple mac mini + airport xtreme and an iPad... I set it up and everything worked like a charm...
I am considering an older 1642, get a real good deal to make up for the extra cost of having a mac mini /airport/iPad... but I don't want all that GAK in an installation like this... I really want a stupid, simple, plug and play, works every time, no problems solution...

just did a gig last weekend with a soundcraft... it was great! used a router and ipad... BAM!! worked no issues and it sounds great...

now... give me that in a Presonus Studio Live Ai as it is much simpler for my non engineering clients... it has to be really easy dump stupid simple... and has to work with no issues.

I would not trust the dongle setup for anything other than a very close in connection, regardless of what it might be capable of in ideal situations. That your good reputation is on the line with every install makes that all the more so.

I have used a router out to several hundred feet line of sight without connection issues in hundreds of gigs. As you can connect the router direct to the Ai boards, I would say to use one of the approved routers and mount it outside of the back room you are using to assure good line of sight connection. Your setup will be as reliable as a wireless system can be that way. Routers are cheap in the scheme of things with an equipment install, so I wouldn't skimp with the dongle. I do use the dongle on occasion, and at home testing, but never when money is on the line.

I'm not sure if that is in the context of what has been on the forums, but I can say that I have not seen a lot of grief with an approved router, properly set up. I don't discount what I see here, but I do know there are thousands of these systems running without complaint (including two of my own) which tells me it is likely to be more in the setup and hardware configuration than in the capabilities of the mixer. That, of course, is just one man's opinion.

With more and more affordable wi-fi optioned boards out there, your scope of choices will only get wider!

I believe Presonus just came out with a firmware update for the AI boards that solves some of these issues.

But it is well known that the wifi dongle is not meant to be connected to by an iPad, you still must use a Wifi router, you can connect the mixer to the router using the wifi dongle, but if it were me I'd just hard wire it with an Ethernet cable. The beauty is even though you do need a router, you don't need a computer and that's sweet!

Unless you know there will be at least one technical person on call at that facility, I can't really recommend it. I have a 32.4.2AI in a church that likes to forget some of its settings on power down. I feel like this is happening every 5-6 times I power the board off. Apparently this doesn't affect all boards, but I'm not sure about that.

2795: AI mixers lose autosaved state and revert to default settings (zero out) Some users have seen AI mixers randomly losing their autosaved state and reverting to the default settings after a power cycle. It does not affect Scene or Preset memory. It only affects the last state of the mixer before powering off.
