Whats up guys! i posted a while back about hooking up a tube pre to my current setup. (speaking of which, this post may need to go in Firestudio Project) anyways, ive got it running into the Spdif in on my 2nd FSP, which means that my tube pre is doing the A/D conversion. I would like to try running it in such a way that the FSP does the conversion for testing purposes. I have sends and returns on the FSP... i guess im just wondering how i would connect this thing and how it would be routed within S1. Im not sure how i would get the signal into s1 using the returns... any advice would be great!!! by the way, even the way its hooked up now sounds great, just wanted to see if there was a difference in the a/d converters. thanks everyone!

Which tube pre are we talking about? That may make a difference in available connections.

Ok. Use the TRS balanced outs on the ART into the REAR inputs on the FireStudio Project. This will bypass the gain on the mic pre's on the FSP. IIRC, there are inputs 1 and 2 on the back of the FSP on the back.

Make sure you set your +4/-10 switch on the ART correctly. The line inputs on the FSP are listed this way on the tech specs so I'm guessing you'd want +4dBu:

Maximum Input Level (Unity Gain, 1 kHz @ 0.5% THD+N) + 10 dBu
Maximum Input Level (Minimum Gain, 1 kHz @ 0.5% THD+N) + 22 dBu

ok, gotcha.. except for the inputs on the back... theres just a send and return.. it makes sense t route it to the returns, but if thats the case, how do i choose those "ins" as an input on a track?

Unless you can configure the return as an input (which I don't think you can), then you want to use a trs to xlr cable and come back in on one of the preamps. Just watch the gain staging when you do.

Didn't you say you have a FireStudio Project? Mine has inputs 1 and 2 on the back as 1/4" TRS inputs. I would just use those. Still plug into the pre, but have that feed analog tot he FSP.

Matt- doesnt that defeat the purpose though? i would want the tube pre signal just to go straight to an A/D converter.. wouldnt running the (theoretically) better signal to go through a lesser preamp just nullify what the tube pre did?

I would agree with you. I don't have a project, so I don't know the flexibility of routing for that unit. On the FST, I have 6 pairs of TRS inputs that would be used for this. The project lists the inputs as Send/Returns for channels 1 and 2, so I don't know for sure that they would show up as inputs in the DAW, or if they are just an effects loop like a guitar amp would have. If its the second option, you would either have to do what I suggested, or use SPDIF to bypass the mic pres.

I thought the inputs on the back did bypass the preamp. Let me dig through the manual again...

Return 1 and 2 (Line Inputs). These are the line-level inputs for channels 1 and 2. Their gain structure is identical to the 1?4” inputs for channels 3-8 and are typically used for signals not requiring preamplification (CD/MP3 players, effects processors, etc.). These inputs are normalled to the channel 1 and 2 preamp outputs, so they take precedence over the corresponding Mic/Instrument input on the front of the FireStudio Project. (This means that if a cable is plugged into the channel 1 return input on the rear of the FireStudio Project, the channel 1 Mic/Instrument input will be inactive, and it will become active again when the cable is removed from return input 1.)
