does anybody use an apple imac with their studiolive? i was looking into a mac book pro but, but for the price you can get an imac for the same price. maybe not as portable but not too bad.

No I'm not a freaking pilot!! The Air Force won't let me have a suit with a zipper...or sometimes shoestrings.
My advice and suggestions should never be considered advice or suggestions. These are mostly insane ramblings of a poor aircraft mechanic who can, strangely enough, still hear.

I have an iMac 21,5" (3,06 GHz, 500GB HD, 4 GB 1333 MHz RAM). You can see it on my avatar photo on the left. It´s working fine with the SL, VSL and Capture (haven't worked with Studio One yet), and its not only less expensive than the MacBook, there is a clear advantage because of the larger display, especially when you're working with VSL. And it's portable enough. I use it for live recording, so I bought a custom made flightcase to carry it:
Just kidding. Seriously i haven't worried about it. But with apple reaching 10-12% of the market share, the day will eventually come that it will be required.

Most of the experts say that anti-virus protection is a waste of money on a Mac. Also, anti-virus programs often have to be disabled to allow audio applications to work properly anyways.
I just got an iMac quad-core i7 and ran a little test with it. The thing is unfreakin' believable. I put together a quick session with 16 tracks and ten instances of Waves plug-ins on every track. (4x L1+, 5x Maxx Volume, 1x IIR-L per channel), and the CPU performance meter was barely deflecting.
On the strength of that test, I thought I'd try running a CPU test session that was designed by one of our forum members here (sorry, I don't remember who it was!). Their test is an unbelievable CPU hog! On my MacBook core2-duo I was only able to run about 5-8 tracks successfully. On the new iMac i just got 27 -- yes, you read that correctly, 27! (And I haven't even put in my extra RAM yet!!)
So far I have tested it with S1, Capture, and Boopm Recorder. All seems well. I can't imagine I'll be thinking about needing more power for a LONG time, andI don't think I'll ever want a bigger display (I got the 27" -- it is actually hard to take in the whole view at once -- I find my head has to move much more to scan the whole thing.)
So far, I can wholeheartedly endorse the new iMacs. Several others posters here have them, and I have heard of none that are having any problems.

It could be a lot of things. The bridge chip may have failed, power supply problem, the drive may have a mechanical problem, or it could be something like catalog/directory corruption that prevents it from mounting.
On Mac, I have successfully used a utility called Data Rescue (also available for PC). I had a drive that wouldn't mount, and it was able to save quite a lot of data and money for me. Although the program is not terribly cheap ($99 for the basic version), it is cheaper than bringing it to the shop for professional data rescue, if it comes to that.
One other thing you could try (maybe first, if you have the hardware and the wherewithal) is to put the drive mechanism into another drive housing and see if it works.
If the drive is under warranty, you should be able to get the mfr. to fix or replace it for you, and sometimes (if they are generous) they'll recovered the data onto a new drive if they have to send you a replacement.
Good luck!

thanks for your advice but i processed the return of the hard drive already. i was able to transfer all the files before it gave up on me so im just trying to get a working hard drive. i thought the warranty would be nice than buying another one.
im just wondering coz im new to this gears and stuff and all the warranty thing. why do we have to pay for shipping it back to them? i dont know if this is how it also work with presonus. just curious!
anyway, thanks again.

Hi APR...I just got an i7, and my SL. Do you record to the internal iMac drive, or the external usb? The other option is to hang an external firewire drive off the SL, What have you found best?
I have yet to get everything set up, but am going over all the bits and pieces I need to have ready. I think I'll be adding a couple virtual instruments and I'll probably try Studio One, except that the artist version, I hear, doesn't support VI's... I've always used DP, but that would need an upgrade, as well.

this is the first time that i have played with my imac 21.5 with the past recordings that i have with pc. i found out that using my external WD 1.5T (sent thru warranty) with the capture files that i have and opening capture to play the songs, it only works with safe mode 3. the rest is a bit noisy on the back ground. this did not happen to my old acer that is dead now... same specs of hard drive.
please let me know if you have any idea. my hard drive i believe is WD cavalier Green 1.5T with 7200rpm i believe.
i tested the same thing with the internal hard drive of the imac and it is still the same... what was wierd was it was ok when i restatred the computer. anyone experienced this? i never encountered this one with my cheap acer pc. it doesnt feel so good since i bought an imac just to be confident in recording and playing stuff.
thanks,
kibo
