I am interested in the 1818 but am sensing that it doesn't work with usb3. I read that it doesn't work with new macs and that it hates most pc chipsets.
I need to buy a new computer, the old one is dying.

I have an older dell studio XPS Laptop with usb 2 and a 1394 port running windows 7.I am guessing the 1818 wont work with that either?

What NEW computers are there that will work with the 1818?

PC MAC I don't care.

Thanks for your help!

You JUST saw that post from 2012??? FYI the USB 3.0 issue and the chipsets is a problem beyond the control of Presonus. They are putting as many resources on the issue as they can but some movement on the computer companies part is often needed, and has not been forthcoming to this point...

To answer the question, many of us have Asus computers with AMD processors that just work, no issues, it just works! My son has been a big fan of these and so I have a few and they all work.

yeah pardon me, this is my first day on the forum. I am a computer and recording novice. Part of the problem Im having in setting up a new DAW has been that info is often a couple years old.

I certainly dont blame Presonus , didnt mean to come off that way. There has always been issues with the dell usb chipsets.

for the past 8 years ive been running Tracktion with a line 6 ux2. on windows xp.
but now, I need more inputs and a new computer. the 1818 looks attractive in alot of ways to me.

Its a home hobby studio, but I do occasionally work in/with pro studios as a musician.
I need to be able to record live drums and two instruments at home . it would be swell if there were something that worked with that dell xps laptop but ...sorrry im ramblin and have no idea what im talkin about.

thanks for the tip towards Asus, Ill chek them out. Cheers

Ok, so here's the deal...avoid:

ANY USB 3.0
Ivybridge intel processors
Late 2013 Macs with USB 3.0 ports only.
Some sandybridge processors... do your homework...

In short, avoid new technology, and OS or be prepared to HOPE that they will support it and provide patches...

BTW Microsoft XP is dead as of April, no further support from them, or updates... time to move on...

I have a following

Dell Inspiron 3rd gen i5 -- doesn't work well
Acer V3-571 4th gen i5 -- doesn't work
HP pavilion 1st gen i5 -- works ok, not great, have to turn off the VSL

Home built desktop with an AMD Phenom X4 945 -- works great.

I had planed on possibly using this for small live gigs but it is really touchy (I don't think an audience would love you if you had to stop mid song and uninstall and reinstall the audiobox driver). Don't buy it just for the VSL part, I was disappointed in that portion. It does sound pretty good for the price though.

Im confused a bit because in the patch notes i posted above it says "With the AudioBox 1.2 update, all AudioBox-series interfaces become compatible
with USB 3.0—a rarity among audio interfaces.
"

can i get confirmation? does the 1818 work with usb3? or not?

avoiding new technology and buying anew computer are two things i dont necessarily thinkn go together. I dont doubt your advice tho because it is the same advice given to me by a professional engineer. he told me to get an old powermac and older version of protoools. but its hard advice to take for someone wanting/needing to buy a new computer. I understand most people use a dedicated machine for their DAW...thus my desire to use the dell laptop, but if Im buying a new machine anyway, it would be nice if it could also work as my DAW.. yikes, Im lost.

If you are able at all, get a dedicated audio computer by an audio/computer specialist (there are a number of ones with a good name in different countries). At least that's my advice unless you really know your stuff.

Needless to say, my AB1818 VSL works just fine with my computer ...

From my experience it will not work with USB 3. I don't have a machine that is all USB 3 so I have been able to connect it to the USB 2 ports and it works but has been unusable due to the immense amount of popping and clicking.

Thanks again for the helpful replies!

Even In my current antiquated system, i had to work around cracks and pops caused by my intel usb chipset.
The workaround for me was a powered usb hub. granted that was usb like 1 or something.

Cheers everyone, thanks again for the help!

I thought I had done my homework when I bought a new laptop.

I got a Lenovo Y510P which has a USB2.0 port and is a Haswell (not Ivy or Sandy) i7.

Unfortunately there is popping and crackling all of the time when I attach the 1818vsl. The 1818 worked great with an older laptop that has since died (a Dell Precision M4500). I have tried disable parking on the CPU and using an external USB hub. I haven't been able to disable XHCI because Lenovo does not have that option in the BiOS and has informed me they can't do anything about that.

At this point I have to either return the laptop and eat the $300 restocking fee or sell the 1818VSL and hope that somewhere out there is an interface that would work on this laptop but I don't know that there is.

It's a bummer because I really don't know of any currently available system guaranteed to work out of the box. I was hoping Presonus had a list of confirmed work/don't-work laptops but until I see confirmation that a system WILL work I don't want to lose money gambling again unless I know a particular config WORKS. I realize there are myriad configs out tere, especially on the PC side, but a list of all known working/non-working baseline-laptops would be a great way to look for trends and advise customers looking to build around the 1818vsl product.

NO audio interface manufacturer has the resources to compile a list of all known working/non-working baseline-laptops.
There are simply too many possibilities. MANY interfaces from MANY audio manufacturers are having compatibility issues with BOTH late model PC's AND Macs. Is this the fault of the small audio companies OR is it the fault of Intel & Apple for not adhering to industry standards and/or not caring about our little niche market? Yes, my 1818 did not work properly with the computer I originally intended to use it with. So what did I do? Ok, yes I whined about it a bit. I thought about losing money and re-selling it on eBay. But now, a year later am I STILL whining? No, I bought a used machine for under $100 to use with my 1818 and it worked flawlessly.

That being said I have one word for you,(acronym actually)...........AMD. Every AMD based machine I've tested my 1818 with has
worked flawlessly and, AFAIK, all the other users here that have tested with AMD machines can confirm this. My 1818 also works
fine with several of my Intel based machines:

HP XW6000 Dual 3.2GHz Intel Xeon Processors, 8GB RAM WinXP SP2
HP Compaq NC6320 Laptop Intel Core2Duo 2.0Ghz Processor 3GB RAM Win7 Ult x32

Dell Latitude E4310 Laptop Intel i5 2.67Ghz Processor 4GB RAM Win7 Pro x32

Audio Interfaces: Terratec EWS88MT PCI (2), Audiobox 1818VSL USB & FP10 Firewire, Steinberg MI4 USB, Line 6 Toneport GX & PodXT, Roland GS-10, NI Rig Kontrol 3

Cristofe,

I understand that a complete list would be impossible. As someone who has been combing this forum for any shred of credible assurance of what DOES work I would appreciate a list (user or Presonus made) that said "Here are examples of works out of the box, here's what has been rectified via cell parking/XHCI-disabling, here's what models will always crackle and pop".

When you go through the Presonus support process they collect every shred of information about the laptop so they would have the most centralized database. However, just a sticky on the forum of people saying "WORKS/MITIGATED/DOESN'T".

It's a 2+ year old problem and I'm much more interested in getting a working rig going and recording than assigning blame or whining.

As it stands, I ordered a used Lattitude E4310 based on a comment you (Cristofe) posted saying it worked like a charm. No luck finding one for $100 sadly It's impossible to buy that laptop new though. At this point I don't believe there are any "new" laptops currently on the market that work with the 1818VSL. I hope I am wrong.

WORKS:
Dell Precision M4500

CRACKLES:
Lenovo Y510P (Tried Disabling Cell Parking, Buying a USB Hub. Lenovo does not support XHCI disabling via BiOS)

Yeah, sorry to disappoint you but that's still impossible for users or companies. Just because one user has a model that works and another has a model that "crackles and pops" does NOT mean that ALL users will get the SAME results from EVERY example of those models.
The ground is constantly shifting as PC manufacturers OFTEN change components, (even MOBOS!!), on the SAME models. Unless you
buy a PC that has been purpose built for audio production its going to be a crap shoot.

Not the words I used but yes, MY E4310 does, in fact, work just fine with my 1818. HOWEVER, if the E4310 you ordered doesn't work with your 1818, and you didn't buy it from a dealer with a solid return policy, that is not my fault......or problem.
