I've read in numerous articles about engineers reference disks. (Most recent by Mitch Gallagher in Premier Guitar)
I'm expecting me new Eris E8s this week and was considering finally making myself one to compare my old speakers to the new.
I was wondering what was on YOUR reference disk?

Assuming I will want songs with great stereo imaging, or reverb tails, or multiple instrument types to see if I am hearing things across frequency better on one than the other. Assume different styles as well would help.

So I am looking for ideas. What is on YOUR reference disk? Let me know.
This should be an interesting and fun thread I hope.

Agree on a few of these.

So far I've added

Red Rain - Peter Gabriel
Hotel California - Eagles
Babylon Sisters - Steely Dan
I can't make you love me - Bonnie Raitt
Leave it - Yes (Trevor's mixes still amaze me)

Need something modern too in other styles.

I have just one track sung by a friend of mine who I have seen many times live and who I now do the sound for exclusively.

This was originally taken directly from the desk to a DAT recorder (remember them) and has made it onto many formats from cassette tape upwards but now resides on my iPhone as a .wav file.

Wherever I go and want to listen to sound whether in a car, through a desk at a live venue, in a music shop listening to mixers, monitors etc. or in a hi-fi shop comparing amplifiers or speakers or even when setting up my hi-fi at home I play this track.

I use it as a reference for everything and most people are blown away by the dynamics, sound balance and the live feel of the song.

It's a full band version of Brown Eyed Girl which is one of my all-time favourite songs in any case.

Figures if it sounds anywhere near like it did when it was recorded I will usually be a happy man

Hope that helps?

Kind regards,

first off you need a well rounded scope reference material and music that is very well recorded. Chesky Records has been a standard of the industry for a long time. They have a nice collection of reference music recordings test tones and noise discs. the Ultimate Demonstration disk is awesome and has a variety of music types specifically selected for different aspects you will want to use to look into the sound.
Check it out!
http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Demonstration-Disc-Critical-Listening/dp/B00002MXUH

also Steally Dan is a good reference point... Eagles one song inparticular "Love Will Keep Us Alive" is an outstanding depp wide mix with really nice vocals... Female vocalist, Sara K and rebecca Pigion... great recordings and vocals... good to have a hand full of different music type and productions... again the Chesky CD is great for testing speaker systems. they give you a spoken guide before each music track and talk about what to listen for within the music and vocals

you need pop/jazz/rock/classical and blue grass... high quality is the key... just a song you like is not the answer as it may not be the best recording quality you need a variety of high quality pro recordings...

My friend db Dave who is a meyer sound system designer and tech uses a recording I made! says it has killer deep wide mix and bass and is impressive on big concert systems... low end baby!

this is another good one:

it has my friend Livingston Taylor on it... great voice!

What excellent responses. I will definitely check out the reference discs on Amazon. Thanks for posting the link.
I agree on variety, my problem was not knowing best examples from other styles I am less familiar with.
Something like your recommendation seems a great next step.
Thanks again everyone. Keep em coming.
