Currently I run two 16 channel PreSonus boards linked together. With My instruments primarily on one board and grouped to a Subgroup. With Sopranos, Altos, and Tenors to their own respective subgroups. I have the ability to pan the subgroups, however if I attempt to pan the channel that is sent to the subgroup I am unable to do so. I have also realized that if i undo sub grouping for that the same channel and send it to the main and the main only I gain the ability to pan again.

So the question is is their a way to pan individuals channels while they are being sent to the subgroups?

Well, since the subgroups are mono you would have to send to 2 subgroups, and I don't know if this works or not I have not tried it...

It'll have to be a linked pair of subgroups. Panning of the pair is done with the relative settings of the subgroup faders.

Ok. The problem I guess that im trying to solve is can I take two separate channels (for two different types of input... lets say two different sets of keyboards) send them two the same sub group and then pan one to the left and the other two the right. While the subgroup is still in mono?

Nope... sorry what were trying to tell you is you CANNOT get stereo (pan-able) on a MONO buss... it's MONO not panned to center but MONO...

The inputs are sent to the stereo buss (main outs), so they can be panned to either of the STEREO outputs, and while "technically" it's a mono signal, it's "centered" when NOT panned... does that make sense?

It's like sending a source to a single Aux for monitoring, there IS NO PANNING... but add a second Aux, link then and then they are pan-able...

As mentioned, the only way you can use a subgroup and maintain the pan position of each channel is to link a pair of subgroups and send the channels to the pair. Essentially it takes two MONO subgroups to create one STEREO subgroup. Unfortunately that means you go from having 4 subgroups to 2 subgroups if you'd like to work in stereo (which I always do). Myself, I send the Vocals to SUB 1+2 linked and I send the Drums to SUB 3+4 linked, instruments go to MAIN.

In fact the Old Analog Mixers worked exactly the same way (at least the ones I had did)

The nice thing with two linked 16.4.2s is that you can have 4 paired subgroups, 2 for each mixer. So by moving one voice range (e.g. the tenors) to the mixer with the instruments you can still have a 'stereo subgroup' per voice range.

Ah, cool, I didn't realize you could use all 8 subs when linking 2 16.4.2s, I knew you could only use the AUXes from the master console so I assumed that you could only use the SUBs from the master also, if you can use both sets that's sweet!

It is possible on linked studiolives but you have to definitely think about your routing and what is going to what. But the option is in the master section to merge or unmerge the subgroups.
