I don't personally own speakers. When I do sound for bands I normally just use there's. Go straight out of L R MAINS from SL into bottom sub then into tops. Lately I've seen more posts about running subs out of the aux sends.
Most active systems with subs have in-built cross-overs.
So, unless you really need to have separate control over what is sent to the subs, going out of the main L / R outs is fine.
It's how I do it, and my system isn't active.
Now, some here like sending signals separately to their suds, and tend to use the sub mix outputs, or an aux send (making sure it is set to post fader).
I still have a snake / multi-core, so I'm limited by how many returns I have.
Aux fed subs have some awesome benefits, but not at the expense of being able to have the sub info in the subs and the tops info in the tops and no real overlap in the sound there to cause cancellation and other frequency anomalies.
If the system is powered and has these things already in place then all you need to do is plug in, but if I were you I'd start learning about the different types of amps, and speakers and crossovers and powered speakers and their ins and outs.
You will need this if your going to be able to do this with various systems.

Best connectivity Express card/firewire 2 port (400) that does NOT suggest having the TI chipset. (always worked great)
BYTECC Express card (400/800)07150358281
Asus/AMD processor tower. This setups just works on all firewire devices.
Belkin N450 dual band router, works with SL and Ai mixers
Studiolive 16:4:2
SL Ai24.4.2
ABUSB 1818VSL
Faderport
USB pre interface
Studio one Pro V2
LABsubs
loads of audio, and studio gear, and audiophile sound gear (gearslut)
To me, the only time stereo subs makes sense is if you have L/R subs, because it helps eliminate comb filtering, If you run MONO subs (as in one set in one location, could be 1-100 subs but they ALL need to be in the same location within a few feet of each other in space.

Well with Yorkville and EV subs it does matter, because it passes a full range signal and has no way to HPF the tops and sends a full range signal. So your tops would run out of gas sooner then later, but for simplicity sake providing your active system has matching subs and tops You's cable out of mixer L/R mains to the subs with HPF engaged then out of sub and cable up to the top.

Yea, but I would like to see visually how to set up speakers coming out of the subs out and into the sub and aux out into the sub. How does it all work?. I don't own any speakers so I cant actually try it myself. As I stated above. Active or passive!! Thats why a video on speaker setup would be great!! Cheers Rick or Mono! Lol
