I have recently bought an earset mic for the Pastor., Before this, were using lapel mic. One of the most difficult challenges I have faced in this world is to tune a lapel or earset mic. What are your recommended settings? I have 16.4.2, two Herbinger powered speakers and monitors. I am using a Shure173 earset microphone. And the mic receiver is connected through a 100 feet snake.

What do you mean by "tune"? Are you having problems? Or are you just trying to flatten the response?

Hi, sorry, don't take this personally but the lapel mics are terrible, but much of the difficulty associated with your system is likely the speakers... They are undoubtedly very peaky in response and most likely high end heavy...

you wouldn't have a Studiolive mixer would you? Because if you can get those things flattened then you have a good chance of making this work...

Till then anyone that tells you what will work is kidding themselves...

I totally agree with you. Gain staging lapel mics is very challenging. I will keep trying though.

Ok. So when you said "tune" you meant "gain stage"? What is your definition of gain staging? I've seen 17 different people on here refer to gain staging with 17 different definitions. If you could give a little more detail about what you're trying to accomplish you might get a better response.

Also, I have to second Gadget on tuning the speakers to be flat in the room. Without that done first, what's the point?

By gain staging I mean making the lapel mic sounds good, just like the handheld mics. I have in mind using the right GEQs, compression, etc.

So looks like the real problem here has just gotten a reprieve...When your done Eq'ing and compressing and think you have the answers... turn it all off and see how it sounds without all that..If your not appalled I will be VERY surprised...

To me, gain staging just means picking a level to operate at and making sure the input and output of every "stage" of the signal chain is at that level. Maybe that's definition #18. so if you decide to run at -14, then the input should be at -14 and the output should be at -14 of every EQ, compressor, gate, etc.

EQ and compression USE gain staging, but are not PART of gain staging. At least not in my definition. That's why I had the question.

But I still don't understand your issue. Are you trying to get a flat response from an earset mic? Are you trying to color the response to make the speaker (person speaking) sound different? What is your goal in the end?

He just wants it to sound good. He wants the magic EQ setting on the channel. I can not give him that info, just like the rest of you guys I'm not there.
I will say this, don't use a compressor on a ear mount condenser, and stay away from the speakers!!!! Now for gain, less is more with these things. So do this, forget about the numbers, turn the preamp all the way down, put the fader on that channel to -0-or -U-, have your guy start talking with the mic on his ear, then turn up the preamp or head amp until ya can hear it ok AND STOP don't look at the meters or the numbers just use your ears.......If you try to do it by the book you will never get this thing to work......... I have the t-shirt.....

I just did something like this at a local church that was having LOADS of problems...I took my Ai24.4.2, went through the whole system and fixed all the cables, rewired everything, and then used the 24.4.2 and used SMAART...I then added their Mackie mixer back in , added a couple GEQ's and set them up the way the EQ was in SMAART... I set board to -0-, and reset everything up from scratch... did the same with the monitors.. I then went through and set those up also...

The Speakers are Peavey rat fur covered cheapies, but when I was done they were stunned buy the difference... there were some DEEP cuts on the dbx2231EQ's but the gain before feedback and sound were so much better they were gushing...

They had a headset mic, (Shure) that sounded like it was in a garbage can when I got there originally, no matter WHAT you did with EQ.. Afterwards it really didn't sound much different from the SM 58's on stage...

So, tune the system or suffer the ignominy of a mic that will not be tamed...

Note: Some speakers WILL NOT BE TUNED... many many times I have run into speakers (and not always cheap speakers ... were talking JBL SRX speakers here...) that had odd drivers from one speaker to the next, and that had reverse polarity on one or more components...I haven't found a speaker, at ANY price, where the drivers were not different to EXTREMELY different form driver to driver response wise...

BTW, If say the HF component is reverse polarity.. NO amount of equalization will fix that... and no amount will make it any more resistant to feedback...Imagine what happens when you start testing speakers built by people that make a whopping $12 a month salary in China...

This means that if you set up for one of a pair of speakers, the other might be (and probably is) VERY different sounding than the other one! This will exacerbate your efforts unless you take the time to verify EACH speaker individually!
