Pardon me if I'm repeating but I haven't found this posted.

Current setup:
WIn 7 64 fully updated S OF nov
Studio One 2.5 (I think)
Capture 2
Universal Control 1.7.1
Studio Live 24.4.2 build 194 (current to UC 1.7.1)
OHCI reports fully Compatible Firewire

The computer is only used for Studio Live applications.

  • This past week I attempted to use Capture to record a show and Capture Failed to record.

  • There was no error, the transport just failed to leave 00:00:00 (I use the record now button) "Presonus" is the selected audio driver.(didn't that used to say Fire Studio?)

  • Universal Control software continues to work.

  • Studio One Also has the same behavior - no error just won't record.

  • This setup has recorded multiple hours of recordings on multiple occasions in the recent past.

  • The Presonus products have not yet been updated to latest and greatest. (Waiting until after current run to update to newest UC and firmware)

  • What troubles me is that this came out of the blue. I'm used to dealing with Firewire weirdness but this seems like something different. I feel as though the audio interface driver has an issue but I'm not sure.

Has anyone encountered a similar occurrence, or might someone just have an idea of where to start. I'll hitting the knowledge base hard this weekend but any help is welcome.

I've been having the same problem after updating UC and Capture to the latest versions, on my Windows 7 (x64) machine. I haven't tested in Studio One, but I get the same behaviour as you in Capture. It'll record fine for a few minutes. Recording and then deleting it, then recording again a few times. Eventually it'll just stop mid-recording. I noticed that when it stops, the visual levels at the bottom (forget what they're called) are frozen. They're not zeroed out, so to speak. Not sure if that's relevant. If I try to play, the scroller-thingy just stays at 00:00 - same with trying to record.

I haven't had this problem before updating, but I did have issues with the driver before. It would tell me it's not properly installed half the time i booted my SL 16.0.2 up.

I hope someone knows what might be the problem.

OK gang....first thing to look at (This caught me at first too).

When you load capture, look at the bottom center of the main screen BEFORE you create or open a song (and enter the timeline).

Make sure it says PreSonus FireStudio and does not say Built-In Interface or AirPlay. If the interface selected is not a fire studio, it will not record.

    hope that solves your problem.

EDIT: OOps seems I used a different account, I am the original OP. Sorry.

The Loaded drive just says Presonus. I'm not sure if that's a change in 2.1 or not.

This is really getting frustrating, to the point that I completely restored the computer to factory and started over. Exactly the same issue. Universal Control and Virtual Studio Live work just fine. But Capture absolutely refuses to record. It gives all of the appearances of recording but the transport never leaves 00:00:00:00 and the files it creates never have more then a few bytes in them.

So far my support ticket hasn't drawn more then an auto reply, that's disappointing as well. (5 days wasted)

I have to wonder if this isn't the result of out of sync software. UC at 1.7.0 and Capture at 2.1. Boy wouldn't that be weak.

Also I can't upgrade the firmware at this point in time. I won't do that until after the current show's run ends.

You could try changing the firewireID from 0 to 1 and then back to 0 (slowly) in the system menu of the board after the computer has booted but before opening capture and see if that helps. It might not but definitely worth a try

sjc's suggestion is a good one. This is in the mixer on the LCD display. Page down until you see Firewire ID.

I understand how to change firewire Id on the board and thanks for the suggestion, I'll likely try it.

I would like to understand why this might be a viable suggestion.

    Thanks

I have an issue with the way my board and computer boot up, and I am not the only one, but I think the percentage of people with this issue is low, but not low enough to not make this suggestion pretty often. I wish I knew how to remedy it but nobody has come up with the cure for me.

Anyways, the order in which you start up the equipment is:

1 plug firewire into board and computer
    2 start the board
    3 start the computer

Now during step three, while the computer boots up, it is supposed to see a device on firewire and do some sort of handshake/connection to that device. I don't know if this is a UC thing or windows thing or firewire chip thing or what but it does have something to do with the firewireID being set for any devices in the chain.

My problem is that this connection does not happen correctly when the computer boots up. But, UC and VSL still come up and look like they are working, but no sound goes to or from the computer, when I try to play a song from VirtualDJ it just gets stuck and won't play it.

But, if I wait till the computer is fully booted, then switch the firewireID to 1 then back to 0 on the board, it forces the device and computer software to run through that hadshake/connection code again and it completes successfully, unlocking the flow of audio to and from the computer.

My guess is that during the boot of the computer, it is trying to make this connection before one of the pieces of the puzzle is ready and it just doesn't happen.

This isn't to say that this is definitely your problem, but it is definitely worth a try.

I have to flip the firewireID every time I start may system, but I've been doing it for a year without any adverse side effects.

If I understand correctly, a funtion of changing the link is that it causes a complete reset of the FW bus -- giving everything a chance to play nice if something went wrong in the boot-up/connection process. It won't hurt anything to do it as a remedy, but you should turn down any headphones, monitors, mains, in-ears, etc. before doing it -- you don't want to give anyone a nasty pop!

I always like to understand as much as I can, helps to avoid the dumb mistakes So I just make the really big ones.

I will report back on the results.

Do you guys know if Presonus has this work around posted anywhere in the knowledge base?
