Hi, I was wondering if anybody had a chance to listen to the new Sceptres yet and would share some impressions (or even a review, maybe?) especially with regard to their performance/price-ratio. It's hard to come by any first-hand experience on these. I'm also interested in their off-axis response: How much does the sound change as you move off-axis? One last thing: How much latency do they add to a signal? Thanks!

There is a video on YouTube of a fairly successful producer who is listening to them against the Events and NS10s. He was dumbfounded.

Yes, I've seen it. It's featured on the Presonus blog also (which leads me to doubt it legitimacy). A first (disappointing) review of the S6 is also out: http://fr.audiofanzine.com/enceinte-active/presonus/sceptre-s6/editorial/tests/le-spectre-des-sceptres.html

Anyway, I'm looking forward to further initial impressions from some forumites.

The review on Audiofanzine can now also be read in English here: http://en.audiofanzine.com/active-monitor/presonus/sceptre-s6/editorial/reviews/helter-sceptre.html

First of all, the review is flawed. Everything is compared to the Eggs, like the Eggs are some sort of standard. It could totally be the guys room that makes his Eggs work for him, and something else not. We don't know anything about his room, placement, his history, credits, etc.

The author contradicts his text with the measurements provided. It is clearly a difference in sound, not an excessive boost from 2-5kHz. That said, just how were the measurements made, how much smoothing, etc?

I have heard the monitors and they sound like monitors with a horn. My only complaint was they were not loud enough for me to crank to shock and awe a band huddled in front of them.

So, if PreSonus puts something up, it is not legit?

I'm just saying that it's common practice in the industry to book musicians and producers to plug products on videos.

Monitor reviews are pointless. No two rooms, placements, sets of ears are the same. You cannot trust what someone else does. You have to try it in context. Find a local dealer with inventory and book a demo.

I auditioned seven pair of monitors before selecting the S8's. I found a local Pro Audio store that had a pair on loan, so I made my way down there with reference CD in hand. When I stepped into their "listening room" (untreated mind you) I was a bit concerned to find the Sceptre's up on very tall stands and spaced about eight feet apart – on the periphery of the workstation they had set up. Well positioned around the mix position were two pair of Focals – the Solo6 Be 6.5's, and the CMS 40's. The bottom of the Sceptre's were above my head while seated, nevertheless I proceeded to audition tracks from a variety of genre as well as a couple of mixes giving me fits.

When we fired up the S8’s I was surprised by a couple of things; first the soundstage was absolutely expansive, and the horns were clear and detailed – not very horn-like in my estimation. The bass was deep but not at all flabby, and the overall sound was pleasant – I could have used them as-is, without the ability to fine tune (on back). I listened to the Focal's in the conventional mix position, and they are indeed incredibly flat. I had to move the chair back a few feet and or stand to really hear what the S8’s had to offer. The process was far from scientific; if I stood the Focal's were at a disadvantage, because I was out of their sweet spot, if I sat the Sceptre’s sounded good, but even better when I stood with my head in that imaginary equilateral triangle - if you will. I won’t bore you with the details of the other four pair of monitors I auditioned, in the end I found the Sceptre’s to be incredibly revealing and far less constraining because of the wide stereo image they produce. They arrived a few days ago!

I've been busy being Santa the past few days, so I've done little more than set them up and give them a cursory listen. My control room is well treated, and I placed the Sceptre's on a pair of IsoAcoustics ISO-L8R200 stands. I played many of the same songs I used throughout the evaluation process, and they sound absolutely fantastic right out of the box - both in the mix position, as well as a few feet out. After Christmas I'll get serious about tuning them, but for now - I couldn't be happier. I for one am not even remotely concerned by the Audiofanzine review, because it isn't a review – in the traditional sense. It’s heavy on supposition and conjecture and light on methodology, reproducibility, and unity (like a dangerous experiment). I'll pick up a couple decorative eggs when I get some free time, but in the meantime I’m going to enjoy my new monitors!

I tried to sneak in and change one word - it backfired on me

One of the of the criteria of a good experiment is utility - not unity. I could argue the review lacked unity, but that wasn't my original intent.

Merry Christmas!
