Hi folks, new here and was wondering if I need any special sound card in my pc. I have studio one pro with ezdrummer and my pc is an HP Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600. Most likely a realtek sound card of some sort.

If you're into audio recording and want to get serious, you will need something better than Realtek. Although it will probably be baked into your motherboard.

Looking and some of the options, there's a great range of audio interface from PreSonus. Both for USB or FireWire and in different price ranges. You could also go for PCI(e) based I/O, but you'd have to look elsewhere. Just search for ASIO soundcard PCIe on Google.

These types of cards (ASIO) will allow you to run with very low latency and have a nice responsive work environment.

But foremost try to think of what you want to do with the sound card and how much I/O you'll be needing. Are you going to use outboard gear, or all in the box. Are you only going to use VSTi and samples, or are you going to record as well? And what are you going to record?

All these questions will help you find the audio interface that best fits your needs.

I guess I need to be more spicific. I have a presonus firestudio I was more worried about how my drums would sound (ezdrummer) how might my synth plugins would sound. That sort of thing.

I'm not sure what you are actually asking for here? You are talking about a Realtek audio interface first and talking about a PreSonus firestudio next.

If you are going to hook up the firestudio to the above mentioned computer, disable everything you don't need from the onboard stuff (ie. audio interface, maybe integrated graphics is you are using an differtent graphics card) and use the firestudio.

If you plan to use the internal Realtek card, make sure you use the asio4all driver and not the defaul on that comes with the motherboard.

Obviously the sound quality from the firestudio will be a lot better because of much better Digital / Analog conversion. You'll also be able to record decently using the firestudio. But for simple playback you can use the Realtek.
