I haven't had a chance to hear them yet.....But PreSonus has some pretty nice, reasonably priced Studio Monitors for about $150 each....Check out Guitar Center or Sweetwater for more info.

Here's a link for the ones at GC.... http://www.guitarcenter.com/PreSonus-Eris-E5-High-Definition-2-way-5-25--Nearfield-Studio-Monitor-108866757-i2968842.gc

Choose your budget, keeping in mind it's an extremely wide market, and make sure you're investing properly (so if you're serious about mixing/mastering, aim high).

Then pick a bunch of monitors in your price range, grab some music you're intimately familiar with (such as the first album you ever bought), and choose the speakers which sound the most "right" to you, listening out for bass clarity and a smooth crossover.

Look for extended bass response (8" drivers or a sub) if you work with electronic music or film soundtracks.

i am not a professional... only know my ears but i use the Samson Resolv 50a (discontinued) and they were reasonably priced near-field monitors (self powered bi-amped cab approx. 75 watts each) so i would suggest looking at the Samson line also. just my two cents...

i think i gave like $400 for the the pair.

Getting monitors is a good idea.
Just remember your room acoustics should be something to think about too.

I use Event ASP-6's as my main DAW monitors and Edirol MA-15D's [smaller pair] stitting on my 88 key digital piano corners for closer direct sound while MIDI playing/recording & editing.

The Event's continue to surprise me with great results, and even though I've had them for about 5 years now, I like them more & more all the time.

I have JBL 4406's, some proprietary monitors and a number of systems like Infinity RS2's, old Pioneer HPM 150's. I have a few Audio Concepts speaker systems and they are awesome. These have been acquired over the years, and give me any number of speaker sound combinations to check a mix on.

I can't wait to hear the Presonus speakers...This will be a game changer in this price range!

It's definitely a good idea to reference your mixes on more than one source to make sure they will translate well.
In addition to my Mackie HR824's I check my mixes in the car and on a VERY crappy boombox. If it sounds right
on all three systems I know I'm good to go!

Just as a quick follow-up, I had a listen to the Mackie MR5 monitors this weekend and holy crap they sounded fantastic for the price. Definitely check those out.

You should take a listen at the impressive and affordable Focal professionnal CMS series, very transparent and fast on transients with a beautiful soundstage. Even the tiny CMS 40 sound much bigger than they are...

Don't know if they have been released in the States, but not yet in Europe... Anyway they should be worth a listen, same thing for the Sceptre range because "on paper" they could be one the best bargain available
