I'm pretty much set on buying a Firestudio Mobile, except for the fact that it has balanced TRS outputs only, and my power amp only has unbalanced RCA inputs...
Can I connect those two with a balanced->unbalanced cable? If so, what would be the best wiring?

You can do it that way. Keep your cable runs as short as possible and keep them away from any electrical sources as much as possible.
You can use a paired TS to RCA cable and be alright. Change yourself to a balanced setup as soon as you can afford. It'll make for a cleaner monitor output.

My advice and suggestions should never be considered advice or suggestions. These are mostly insane ramblings of a poor aircraft mechanic who can, strangely enough, still hear.

Would it be better if I soldered a TRS->RCA cable myself with either of the following wirings:
1. TRS tip --> RCA tip, TRS ring and sleeve --> RCA sleeve
2. TRS tip --> RCA tip, TRS sleeve --> RCA sleeve (leaving the TRS ring alone)
Or would it make no difference compared to a TS --> RCA connection?
#1 is the standard method and will work well. If you had good quality cable and good soldering, connectors and connections you should be good for any length you'd need in your home studio. I wouldn't exceed 25' for anything unbalanced, as a general rule of thumb. Unbalanced has potential for more noise, but as long as the transmission length isn't excessive, fidelity is not compromised with unbalanced signals, so I wouldn't worry about needing to have something with a balanced input just because the FSM is balanced out.
As ML says, you do want to make sure not to run unbalanced lines parallel to AC lines (nor leave excess cable coiled up near a noisy transformer in your studio).
A tip/sleeve to RCA cable will work fine, too (electrically identical).
