International standards are that copyrights are free, when the author of a work is dead for more than 70 years. That's in general - But there might be translations or edited works on the market, where the editor or the translator still have copyrights. So, to be sure, it is not enough just to find a copy that was published at the lifetime of the author. Always look, if any more persons have rights as co-author, ghostwriter, editor, translator.
