For info: the Nomad Blue Tube plugins get scanned by S1 and you can even drag them into a track, but then a pop up appears:

Yeah, I saw that pop up about an hour ago as I evaluated SONAR X3 against Studio One and found more and more things I would use in S1 than SONAR X3.

Don't get me wrong, I think X3 is pretty nice but it's the little unfinished areas that make me crazy.

A browser that lists track icons for drag and drop but can't show a thumbnail pic to let you see what you are selecting.
Friendly I/O names that can't format mono inputs and stereo inputs separately
Mackie MCU support that hasn't been updated since 2006
Audio Snap where you can't add your own transient markers
Drag and drop browser features that don't approach the level of S1

I know there are more than this but who cares?

We need a few.

Set measure/beat to Now is a feature that is very handy for me.

Track Templates that also picks up the bus routing.

I think a lot of people care. I just think those of us that have an interest in Cakewalk because we've shelled out so much money to them are all shell shocked from their forum and are simply afraid to say anything anymore. I see it's pretty ugly over there already this morning. Happy Monday. That's why I like this forum so much. You can speak your mind and 99% of the time not get berated or called a childish idiot for it ... most of the time.

Anyway ...

Maybe it's ADHD or something, but I get bored staring at the same thing all the time. Colors or no colors, eye candy or no eye candy, I'd love to be able to switch back and forth between Sonar and Studio One once in a while. I see no harm in having both, and Reaper as well since it's so inexpensive, so I'm still interested in what's going on with Sonar. That said, I can deal with all the little things that work differently between DAW's, what I can't deal with though is instability, and that's why I've been asking about the bundled items working with outside of X3.

BTW ... I heard back from Addictive Drums, the bundled version with X3 will work in other DAW's, but Studio One has not been tested, so it's use at own risk and no tech support if you have a problem. But they also said that it should work fine as long as Studio One follows the standard VST protocol.

Yes I got the confirmation from XLn as well.

If someone was in the market for Addictive Drums the upgrade would be worth it.
I have to ask my self now like Jlien X, do I really need another drum VST?

Oh, I meant I'm not interested in Addictive Drums. I already own Abbey Road 70s/Modern Drummer, Studio Drummer, SSD4 EX, EZDrummer, BFD Eco, and I'll be getting Session Drummer 3 if I upgrade to X3, so, too many drums lol. Sorry about the vague post.

Oh and BF3 is out now.

As mentioned there are things that are supported in X3 but not S1 yet like Tempo Beat Mapping but I am getting by with manual beat mapping until such days as S1 adds the capability

I would love for an X3 user to do a side by side comparison of the new comping in X3 just to help highlight areas of improvement in S1.

ARA! I was not expecting that! Maybe more 3rd parties will start to develop for it now? (I'm looking at you, izotope)

OMG, I just watched the video for the new comping feature.

I thought it was pretty cool in X2, but this - well it's what I've dreamed about for years. Makes what we have here a toy.

I don't want to go back to Sonar ,but I do want that comping feature. Hope Presonus notices...

I forgot to ask them, but I saw on the Sonar forum that the X3 bundled version only comes with 2 drum kits, where as if you buy it direct from XLN, you get three.

If that's true ... then the upgrade isn't looking so hot. Man I wish they would have put out a Session Drummer 4 and updated it. You could build custom kits from any sample you could get your hands on via drag and drop, it had 12 outputs, it came with some great sounding kits to get you started.

I still haven't heard back from Cakewalk or AAS either about Strum Acoustic Session.

Be very very careful. This whole Take Lane thing is one of the marketing things that Hibidy and I were talking about in a previous post. Plus, it's something they just started doing and it was buggy in X2. They made it look awesome in the marketing video though. I found one bug where if you selected the Pan envelope on a take lane and adjusted it, it adjust the volume.

So please, if you are excited about it, get the demo and test every feature of it till your blue in the fingers.

I have used both, X2a and Studio One. I agree with themuzic, they look pretty much the same now, but they certainly weren't in X2.

Correct. I mistakenly gave that impression. I'm guessing since they already released X3 as X3a (patched before it hit the street) that we'll see the demo sooner than we usually do though.

My apologies for giving the impression there was a demo available.

They look the same to me as well with the exception of:
Comping (new default)

You don’t hear previously recorded material while recording

New takes mute previously recorded material.

Overwrite

You don’t hear previously recorded material while recording

New material overwrites previous material

Sound on Sound

You hear previously recorded material while recording

That is why it would be nice to get a comparison review from an owner.
To answer the other question about number of kits, the video says three.

I know, but a reliable source says different which is the only reason I mentioned it.

Looking at the video comping looks pretty similar to me, except for the options J pointed out. But that's the nature of software. If you're going to make a new anything it's probably always a good idea to at least - try - to make it better in some ways than what's already out there.

On another front, I still don't get why these systems (Sonar, Cubase) split up the takes when comping instead of just copying the selection.

Anyway. It looks good to me.

If I can get the DL working (Cake server issues) I'll be able to take a closer look but to me the Comping looks indeed better than in S1. Not sure if they reinvented anything compared to other DAWs regarding this feature, but much of the new stuff in SONAR is really starting to make it look like an S1 clone right down to the redraw of waveforms with fades.

Right now in S1 you can keep selecting sections of an already selected section and it will promote it to the top creating a jumble of clips on the Comp track, unless that is a bug. I don't use Comping much as the way S1 implemented it never felt welcoming.

Ultimately I think a slice type tool and workflow would be best. You could slice up the phrase points all from a single take and then use the up/down style auditioning that X3 is using. They wouldn't be slices per say (Though I like how you have that option in X3), but more like a picture frame around the material you want. This would be the simplest and fastest solution IMO.
