$1000 from 9 to 10 !!!! Whoa - looks like they want to keep a lot of peeps on 9 . maybe they're trying to move away from the smaller players in the game. It's certainly discouraging.

One HD thread in particular on their forum was full of complaints! Pretty amazing. At this rate Avid will surely steadily lose Pro Tools customers indeed likely at an ever increasing rate. I can't see any other way around that.

I think AVID are calling it a release for Post houses predominantly but surely that includes HD users? If so this thread suggests that market might be now looking elsewhere to avoid the current HD pricing model. AVID may lose far more customers now than even before and quicker than at any rate previously. The kind of customer responses they are getting (on their own forums), are surely the worst case scenario for a company right after a new release.

Maybe this is a slow slide out of business for the Audio related software division of AVID (Digi IIRC) before it gets broken up and sold off. Remarkable.

AAX seems to be the big new thing for *PT11* (when it arrives) AFAICT. I don't think it will be nearly enough to turn things around with prices so out of touch with their own userbase.

They must have been infiltrated by Presonus loyalists. I checked the upgrade cost and upgraded S1 Pro instead

For me (as far as price is concerned), it's the difference between a solid gold hammer and a solid steel hammer. Both are gonna hurt if they hit your fore-head. But you'll sure look pretty with all those gold bits in the hole that killed you

I'm well aware how time flies, but hasn't PT 9 just been released not all that long ago?

PT9 IIRC was released on the 9th of November last year. Less than a year ago. That might be another thing that has upset their user base.

I'm not surprised. How's this for a bum deal, or a good deal. Depending on what side of the fence you are on. Follow me here.

If you want to go from 8LE to 10 it is $499, but if you went from 8 to 9 since oct 1 @ $300, you get a free upgrade to 10. Stay with me here. So those who already went to 9 @ $300 before oct 1 get slugged another $299.

Way to look after your customers Avid --- NOT !!!

I think Avid is really gonna lose here. Thier history of tea spoon feeding their customer base with features and charging out the wazoo for it is going to bite them in the end. Especially for the low to mid level consumer base. Who wants to pay those prices for a couple of features that probably only moderately improve workflow and sound (which is very subjective). I think Presonus (imo) has positioned itself to take a large chunk of the low-mid level audio market. Protools has a great reputation, but their product is not easy for beginners. I think Avid maybe banking on their reputation to carry them to the next iteration instead of offering features that low-mid level audio users can REALLY use.

As some have pointed out, a majority of commercial houses use PT, and many of them exchange PT projects.
So even if you wanted to change you can't because what are you going to do to your $60,000 gig, say give it to me in another format? Or I will not give it back in PT when that's what they want. %100 of my commercial and celebrty clients use PT and the price isn't the issue. And most keep the same version for EVER lol !

As far as sound quality, that's rubbish (I'm referring to the HD version), it sounds different as logic does to me as well, but PT can obviously put out great sounding projects.

With that said,
I HATE PT! Don't own it, I am a %100 S1 user
And I think PT is a horrible deal and would never ever consider it nor recommend it.

What is it.. about $30,000 - 60,000 of classroom time before you have enough "training" and "credentials" to get to drive in any reputable PT Studio. Thank goodness for Presonus' approach. $300, then $99 upgrades, so in total about what.. $8/month.. if V2 last for 2 years before another upgrade requiring purchase? And training.. well a month on this forum, and a few weeks of watching vids.. and VOILA!
Thanks, Merci, Gracias!

S1 V2 PRO mostly x64 now, SL16.4.2, Fire Studio Mobile (80% of the time, actually), Tube Pre, Digimax D8, Monitor Station, & FireStudio Tube. My fave non-Presonus Recording Gear - BLUE Woodpecker & AT 4060 mic. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit i7 with 24Gb Triple Rail 1600MHz RAM

I love my ToonTrack Superior Drummer 2, NI Vintage Organs, Vir2 Mojo Horns!, & the few UAudio VST's I've "splurged on" so far..

Did they just implement 32-bit floating point?

Yes, and guess what, they've also introduced 64-bit floating point precision in the audio engine... Whoop, whoop. Although they needed a new plugin format for it.

Wow! Other DAWs have had floating point for nearly a decade. Once again, how is PT industry standard?

Well, Pro Tools is the living proof that it's the engineer, not the tool.

Still, I was sort of watching the last few upgrades - and every time on half the new features I went "are they serious? every half-decent semi-pro tool has had this for years and years!".

What's totally fascinating about the comments from the pros is they really must have seen no other DAW for a decade, given their excitement for some of the new features ...
