Has anyone used apple airport extreme or express with the Studiolive and ipad ? I'm looking to get an ipad for a remote controller and would like to have any suggestions for a wireless router.

Yes I do - flawless operation

I have an Airport Express mounted in my SL24's flightcase with permeant connection from audio out to Tape-in on the SL ... That gives you the extra little feature that you between sets can send music wirelessly from your iPad(iTunes) or iPhone -pretty neat

I have used this setup for a while - and as mentioned it has been flawless

I even go against Presonus recommendation .... They recommend that you hardwire the connection between the PC/Mac and the wireless router and only go wireless between iPad and wireless router. I do not do that as my Macbook Pro is connected to the Airport Express wirelessly as well.

To avoid interference with the gazillion other 2,4 ghz devices out there ,I have set up the router to use 802.11n exclusively.

ONE thing about the Express is that - compared to Airport Extreme - the range is quite limited. But in "line of sight" scenarios I would be disappointed to see any drop in signal for the first 100ft or so. My guess is that Extreme handles twice or 3 times that distance - before seeing drop in signal. Drop in signal is not the same as not working anymore, and I have had zero issues. But if you work in VERY large setups and have the need to move 300 feet way from your mixer to mix with your iPad - I would go for the Extreme instead

I use the express. No problems ever. Just like with every other Apple product I own.

Thanks for the responses to my question. I've always had little or no problems with apple products so I thought the airport express or extreme would be good to use between my studiolive and ipad, I just needed to hear from someone that was actually using it.

Airport Express here too. Works perfectly. But as I'm using the QMix app more, I may change to an Airport Extreme for the dual band functionality.

I have just changed network providers and got a new router from BT (British Telecom) giving me a spare. I simply used velcro to stick my old router inside my rack and it works perfectly. Not yet done any distance tests apart from running it while sitting on the white throne. I'm still quite new to the Mac world and I'm sure there is a better solution but this works

The Airport Express is not, you can select you use 2.4GHz or 5GHz, but dual band is to allow both these to be used at the same time, they appear as two separate WiFi networks. The reason for wanting to go dual band for running QMix is so thet the 5GHz band can be used for the iPad(s), whereas the 2.4GHz band can be used for iPod Touch or iPhone(s). The iPod/iPhone does support 802.11n, but does not support 5GHz, hence the need for dual band.

The Airport Extreme does allow simultaneous use of 2.4GHz and 5GHz which would be an ideal router for this use. I think the one Rick Naqvi uses in his more recent videos has the same functionality (Linksys I think)

Oh ok, at the same time...... I knew it would do both, did not know you wanted to run two different networks at the same time. That's no good with the line 6 mic. I wonder why line 6 chose 2.4ghz?

I have been getting ready to purchase the ipad for remote control of the studio live and had asked about routers previously, but have recently been told that I don't need a router to use the ipad with macbook. Is this true, and does it matter what ipad I buy ?

Yes, there are ways you can set up an 'AdHoc' network (just search the Presonus forums, a fellow forumite has even made a tutorial video on how to do this very thing) with Mac or PC. It does actually work, it's just it hasn't got the range or the stability or a dedicated wireless router. Also there have been reports that having the wireless enabled on Mac or PC can cause problems on the Firewire connection between computer and StudioLive. If you are planning to run your entire show from the iPad, it is recommended to get a dedicated router.

Doesn't matter which iPad you buy, all are compatible with SL Remote and have WiFi capability. I use the cheapest option, 16GB with WiFi (no 3G/4G) and works perfectly.
