seeing as how i can't a bite in the 1818 forum, I'll ask here.. if we're not using the analog outs of the vsl, and running spdif for outs to an external d/a ,can the Vsl 1818 actually even playback the audio from say a youtube video? or say itunes? mediaplayer?

tested on both mac, n pc, same thing, No Audio.. ??? is this true, or am I missing something?

I never got the chance to test it Bobby. But I think you're correct.

Ok I guess I can send this unit back.. that's not so cool,it's almost like if you upgrade your signal path you get punished.. lol

Thanks alot I finally got an answer.. I'm not sure why in the world the dev's would have thought this would be a good idea, there are many users who are gonna hate this news,if they are using outboard d/a..

If I remember it's a limitation in the v1.0 driver that they hadn't worked out completely before release.

Before sending it back (unless yuo're losing money in the meantime) hold off til Monday and see if Jason or Bob have any insight. If I was anywhere near mine at the moment I'd try to help you figure this out. At least give them a chance to help.

It may be a case of the driver just around the corner. Ya know what I mean?

I'll shoot them a message to make sure they are aware of the question.

Cheers!

Sounds like a plan,I'm interested to hear what they say about this,as this seems odd.. thanks for the reply btw, I was under the impression, that Presonus knows end users will want to interface with ad/da and this just seems odd, they left out audio to spdif for obvious things like video, itunes,n such.I tried to just work around it,without having it,but one will go a bit mad, without being able to take a break, browse at things, or mainly just listen to Music on an audio interface .. lol

again thanks for the reply..

Hey Bobby,

I did a bit of research on my own. I couldn't find anything in the release notes about SPDIF not functioning. And now that I think back on it I tested this on mine and it worked.

Is it possible that you've got the bitrates out of whack? Just asking to see if maybe that could be the source.

But SPDIF did work on mine for sending the main streams. I can't remember if it is directly tied to the main outs or if it has it's own settings in VSL, though.

I now also remember I hooked it up to the SPDIF out on one of my SL16's and it definitely received as well.

I wish I was at home and I could test this for you. Deployment sucks sometimes!!

Hi,
My sample rates are definitely all the same, Lavry AD 44.1khz/Internal clock to VSL which is set to slave off of the AD, then out to Lavry DA 44.1khz/Locked to the clock.. I def double/triple checked this.. it's def strange, because I can see the meters working fine.. For apps that I have control over their outputs I can get it to play fine, such as Kontakt standalone,Maschine Standalone.. but itunes, youtube for example, it plays no sound.

Your service is much appreciated..

Do you remember if apps like I mentioned worked on your setup during the test phase? It seems really odd, that dev's would let this one go, but stranger things have happened.I'm used to other interfaces, where you can move things around, such as my emu1820m n patchmix..I really love this unit, but don't understand why it's so fixed, if ya get what I mean, or perhaps I just totally don't understand it's routing possibilities, does it have any for spdif?

this one should be fairly easy to just set n forget..

I don't remember exactly what I ran through it. I think it might have been a simple DJ program via ASIO.

I don't use youtube or anything like that on the work machines except when I need to get drivers or something.

If I could see the VSL for the SPDIF I could give you some pointers here.

Just a final curiousity the may lead to something. Is the computer set to use the 1818 as its primary sound device? I admit I'm reaching a bit here.

Hi,
Yes the cpu in mac's audio/midi is set to use the VSL over digital, and in mac's sound it's also set to VSL.
