Since we cannot change the way the 1818 VSL is hardwired, here are a few suggestions for improving the 1818 VSL driver software:

1. Improve the ASIO latency on Windows 7
2. As I understand it, Zero latency que’s is not implemented in S1V2 for AudioBox yet? UPDATE: it will not be.
3. Output bus (Main) should be labeled (Main, Out 1/2)
4. Output bus (Out 7/8) should be labeled (Phone, Out 7/8)
5. Improve resizing of the VSL window: for example size to show all Out if you select DAW outs without scrolling ( right now it is optimize for the Fat channel view alone)
6. Consider adding a SPDIF Out and ADAT Out section
7. Consider adding an “Input” button on the top to toggle its view
8.Consider naming you “Driver Version” the same on the software as on the download page.
9. More obvious visual cue on Fader area when VSL is Off
10 Better Warning system: When the 1818VSL input A/D hits a peak should it not also correspond with the metering on the VSL and go red? Perhaps even add a change in meter color as you approach clipping. Perhaps add an RMS mode. As it sits now the hardware clips (goes red far before the meter show an issue. )
UPDATE: I also have notice that not only is there is NO Clipping indicator on the VSL software but also Studio One Inputs! You may not always notice the clip light on the hardware ( that only goes red when it’s too late). Please update the software to better warn us. NOTE: In previous DAWS even the recorded waves would turn color if you reached 0 db.
UPDATE2: The Meters definitely need improvements. They are not callibrated to a DB scale, and are not in allignment with Studio One. They start at -36 db. I would like to see a full range meter. ( at least -80db-0db) as well as a peak hold time adjustment.
See this thread for more details.

Great thoughts, thanks for starting this thread. Here are a couple more ideas:

Use Stereo Pan rules on linked tracks. The pan controls (both main and monitor) don't work right when channels are linked as stereo pairs - they're currently coupled in reverse, i.e. they go from normal to mono to reversed stereo, but you can't simply pan left or right without un-linking the pair. Can linked channels follow normal stereo pan rules? Seems like a software issue, not hardware.

Larger UI for mixing each monitor send. For live work, It would be awesome to have a mini monitor mixer UI. Presents the same controls as the tiny little send sliders on the main mixer, but in a separate panel with larger faders, using tabs at the top to select which send you want to mix. Option to link sends as stereo pairs 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8 for headphones (in which case the tracks have pan controls), or as mono sends for up to 6 stage monitors. Then present this on an iphone or ipad UI for each performer to control their own monitor mix!

Which leads me to: Offer the VSL remote software for the 1818. When I bought mine a couple weeks back, I was wrongly assuming that VSL Remote was an option, and I am hugely disappointed that it's not. It's the only thing I'm sad about, though... the 1818 is an awesome piece of kit. I've been using a Yamaha DSP factory rig since 2001, with an original DigiMax unit I added in 2003. Now I have the 1818 with the DigiMax and a Midex8 in a road rack, and in one week took my studio out doing live recording.

Great work, guys! Now offer VSL remote for the 1818! Please?

Pretty sure they're working on the app. Not sure when it will be available though.

I'd like to see the interface be broken up a bit differently and have a great deal more functionality a la SL24 instead of 1602. I don't see any reason why it couldn't. It would make for an interface that works just as equally in a live environment as it does in the studio. Full parametrics and some more EQs...ultimate control!

Maybe a place on each channel for Native VST plugins. Maybe not as useful in the studio but could be very good in live work.

I would really like the outputs to be addressable as mono output also. Not just stereo pairs. For eample, When I turn off the VSL I can send separate mixes to one & two from S1 but as soon as you click on the VSL it sends to both, even when they are not linked in the VSL control panel. I need more monitoring outputs for separate headphone monitors. I don't mind using an adapter to adapter the mono to stereo for tracking purposes.
Thanks

I like this idea. More monitor mixes if I need em.

Bump on this.. Just noticed that updating the origial post was not updating the timestamp.
There is also two threads on the same topic. Wish there was a way to consolidate like in other forums.

for me i would love to see three big improvements.

1. i want the abilty to have a send from the vsl that goes to the headphone 7/8 which gives me the ability to select which channels i want to hear. i guess this is called a cue mix. this way i could listen to just the vocals, drums, guitars etc. or a mix of any i choose without affecting everyone elses mix. this would be like a controll room on a mixing board.

2. obviouly, as a lot of people have mentioned, i want mono sends from 3,4,5,6. my main purpose to buy this unit would be for live sound. i would like to be able to run 4 monitors. if you look closely at the picture on the box of the vsl it sure looks like it is supposed to be this way. it is very misleading. i just came home from a local music store and asked 2 people who worked there to look at the box. and then asked based on what they saw how many moitor sends. they said it looked like 6. sends 3 4 5 6 7 8 all look like they are individually controlled. presonus is really misleading people with that.

3. a 31 band eq would be nice. at least on the mains.

all this seems possible with some software updates. i have to decide if i want the 16.0.2 or the 1818. the 1818 seems like it would really help lessen the size of my gear. i was still going to have a computer with my 16.0.2. so my options are 1602 and computer or 1818 and computer.

quick edit: on page 23 of the owners manual it show as picuture of the monitor sends and pan controls. this is no where close to what is shown on the box. this is very bad judgment on your part presonus. you are false advertising on the box.

Is this not possible already? I see a send on each channel for 7/8.

p.s Could you upload a picture of the box? Presonus has also had boxes of the 22VSL being controlled by ipads!!! which we know is not currently possible. Hopefully they can fix these issues with updates(especially the outputs only being stereo when using VSL). Rick really should not have lead people to believe these are studiolives in a rack version. Studiolives work so well with computers and stand-alone because they provide all effects internally via onboard DSP(processor chips).

I would go with the Studiolive because firewire devices handle there processes locally as opposed to usb which is handled by your cpu. Also the Studiolive can be maxed out with effects and again your cpu is just sleeping. I'm still waiting for presonus to release some info of the 1818 running all it's VSL effects on all channels, because I know your CPU is gonna be sweating especially with the added adat channels. They have released no benchmarks, probably have to wait for some end users to report on this.

p.s If your connecting this to a brand new Mac Pro 12 core, then just go usb!!!

i tried to take a picture at the store but my phone died. it shows gray bars going across all the send channels all at different levels. but this is not how the software is. the top of the pair is the level and the next one is the pan. the box makes it seem like they are all turned up to different levels.

i regards to the 7/8 send on each channel. yes you can send a signal but this is not what i am referring to. i mean that once all the volumes are set it would be nice to be able to monitor them at the headphone out. for example if i just want to hear the drum mix i just select those channels. or if i want to hear the aux mix of aux 3/4 i could choose those channels. this is similar to when you are using controll room or headphone out on a mixing board. to do this on the 1818 you can solo the channels and hear them in the main. but if you solo a channel it affects everything. if i hit solo on the drums, lets say channels 4-8, only the drums come out of the mains. it would be nice i could just hear that mix in my headphones without changing the mains. i am also not sure it when hitting solo it also solos to the other channels as well other than the mains.

when you use headphones with to 1602 or any of the studiolives you can choose what you are listening to. i can hit any channel, aux, or main and send only what i select to the headphones. this way you can monitor what a specific signal sounds like.

thats true about the studiolive. but the 1818 is not supposed to do anything to the cpu. there a several videos where rick navi states that you can use the effects/fat channel with no strain on the cpu. he says something about the kernel (no idea). thats why i, like many others, are under the assumption that the processing is done in the 1818 and controlled by the computer. this does make a lot of sense to me. this way everything is very efficient and you could have very low latency. which is what they are advertising.

All these things where possible on the firestudio2626, you could set up multiple mixes(9) to any of the 8 outputs, plus you could tap any of those mixes at any time to the main outs, or headphones, so no hardwire like the 1818. They drop support for the 2626 because firewire is dieing and usb sell's units. I'd get the Studiolive as long as you have firewire!!!

p.s. The sends on the VSL I believe where changed last minute to that odd "send level/pan", originally they were just grey color sends for each output, unless someone chimes in I'm gonna guess all these limitations(stereo outs with VSL) are due to sensitivity to the usb load. Also the Universal Control is a much better(intuitive) software design!!!

Running at the Kernel level means under the software layer and under the OS, so its very close to the hardware level, this is what gives VSL very low latency times as opposed to running the same effect in say StudioOne. There is no DSP on the audiobox vsl's so something has to handle the gate/comp/eq/reverb/delay and the usb,......unfortunately its the CPU of the connected computer. Look at the RME fireface UFX this unit basically is your computer even has standalone recording onboard, amazing unit to say the least, of course also check the price If you have not purchased a computer yet this unit can run off just a little netbook(atom processor) because your just controlling the unit with a GUI for convenience.
