Thanks for all the great info! I went to Guitar Center and got all the right cables. Its pretty much hooked up - I just have to figure out how to make some noise out of this set up =)

I didnt even know there were options to change the APC controller / midi assignments. Super cool. Any additional great videos? Feel free to send them my way!

thanks again everyone!

zita,

my biggest suggestion is to RTM (read the manual) for Ableton Live 8 (hopefully you're running the latest version

I say this because there are many nuances to Ableton that are not really covered in most videos, but are essential to your learning.
you definitely want to read the sections covering routing, warping clips, session view, etc. Also read the section on the apc40 at the
back of the book.

don't be scared of this manual either. they took great care to make it palatable for the novice as well as the seasoned user. If you run into
terms you are not familiar with, Google is a great resource.

the forum www.dogsonacid.com is also a great resource (go to the Grid section). just make sure that you don't ask too many questions there until
you've read the manuals to your software and components. They'll gun you down over there if you're questions are not phrased with the proper
terminology... That said, its a great resource for electronic music, ableton, etc.

Ableton.com's forums are full of useful info on the subject as well.

and of course, the aforementioned www.illgates.com is your one stop shop for the perfect DJ template and ill.gates supports it himself (the guy is a genius).

Good luck!

Jason

Jason,

I did the driver update - now my Firestudio has steady blue light instead of red flashing one.

Do you know if I have to make changes in Ableton's preferences (MIDI and Audio sections) once everything is connected as well? My I/O became gray and I cannot highlight it yellow to pick the channels for 1/2, 3/4 etc.

Also, do you feel is it possible to DJ with Ableton without the ill. Gates settings, or that one pretty much an industry APC40 user standard.

All your help us very much appreciated.

Reboot and then make sure to choose Firestudio in your Input and Output device sections. Then you can change the input/output enabling.

You can do what you want without the Illgates template, but I believe it would be much easier for you to get started with a proper template such as his.
it is used widely by many well known DJ's and is considered industry standard at this point. I don't use it, but I also have 10 years of Ableton use under my belt. I may buy it though, just to have a look under the hood and learn a few new tricks for my own templates (I use several different one's, depending on my needs. i.e. production, dj'ing, live pa, live remixing, etc.).
