For the last year, I have transported my Yamaha MG206C mixer in an Odyssey rack case in my trailer with no issues whatsoever. Now that I have the StudioLive 16.4.2, I am wondering if it is safe to do the same with the StudioLive?

I haven't done any gigs with the StudioLive yet. My first one is next weekend. I just purchased the Odyssey FZGS1304 case for it.

So I'd like to hear from you guys out there. How do you transport your StudioLives to gigs? Do you put them in your trailer or baby them in the back seat of a car or SUV?

Hi,

I live in Texas and travel upwards of 8 hrs to and from gigs and my studiolive 16.4.2 rides great in my 5x10 trailer in my EWI Mixer case from audiopile.net However If I know that I wont be gigging for a small period of time I will roll it inside the house and give it a break from the extreme TX heat and Humidity. Since it is an electronic piece of gear it has contacts that I assume can corrode over time due to moisture. Here is a link to my case
No affiliation with the company other than a high regard for their heavy duty affordable cases. First heard of them on prosoundweb.com

Hey pcpercussion,

Thanks for answering. Yeah, I keep my gear in my trailer 24/7. Never had any issues at all with my Yamaha mixer. It stayed in the trailer through all kinds of extreme heat and cold. However, I have my doubts if the StudioLive is that tough and I don't think I wanna risk it. So I think I'll be letting it ride to the gigs in the back of the SUV, and like you, when I have a few days off, I think I'll bring it in the house.

I do similar.

My mixers are all racked and/or cased. The 1642 are in cases from OSP. The 1602 is in a Hardigg Stormcase. The others are in various from PhillyCase, Anvil, and Calzone and a couple GC or SA brands. They ride in the back of the truck and usually either stay there because I have something else and don't feel like unloading or I just don't feel like unloading.

They eventually come out and find their spot back on the racks in the garage.

My SLs have seen every type of weather feasible.

I think what saves me is a quarterly teardown blowout and cleanup regimen. Keeps the gunk out.

We get every type of weather here in Jersey. From snow to hundred plus with full on humidity.

I've even used one of them in a desert.

Get em in a well designed case and keep em there. It's worth it. Check out carcrusher's stuff if you get a chance. He's a case building genius and has accounted for the needs of our mixers.

Glad to help.

I appreciate the advice and recommendation on a case, Monolithent, but I already ordered an Odyssey FZGS1304 a week ago.

Just waiting for it to get here. I am a little worried because I ordered it from a place called DJDeals.com. It's been a week now and they still haven't shipped it. I've been corresponding with a lady there via email. She is telling me that Odyssey should have sent it by now and she will check on it tomorrow since today is a holiday. I didn't notice when I ordered it that it says "DROP SHIPS FROM MANUFACTURER" on their website. So who knows when I'll get it now. I'll be sure to NEVER order anything from DJDeals.com again.

On another very interesting note, I have an important gig this Friday. It's my first one with the StudioLive. Since I don't know when my new case is coming in, I thought I'd try to rig something up with my old case. It's a 10 RU (OSP) case. I figured I'd cram as much of the StudioLive in it as possible and leave the lid and front covers off and just transport it inside my SUV. However, low and behold... the strangest thing happened....

...amazingly, my 16.4.2. fit entirely inside that case!!! Fit like a glove too! I didn't expect that at all. I'm still gonna keep the new case when it arrives because it does have more room and it has the laptop shelf, but I would have never thought my 16.4.2 would fit in a 10 RU case.

You know what? Hehehe.. I just realized I was on crack earlier. My old case is not a 10 RU. It's a 12 RU.

That explains everything now.

My new case is a 13 RU. I'm looking forward to having that little bit extra room.

Mine started life in the exact same cases. I had to bolt and unbolt the mixer before and after every event to get it to work right. The panel at the back wouldn't allow me to connect the power cord or the firewire or anything below the mic inputs.

You'll probably find the same result. Bring a screwdriver. You'll probably need it.

LOL! I hear you, but nope, I won't need a screwdriver. After I put it in the case, the first thing I did was check to make sure I could operate it in the case. Everything in the back of the case was easily accessible, except for one thing. The power switch. Darn it!!! LOL!

So I unbolted it, lifted it up and put the power switch in the on position.

At the gig, as soon as I plug it into power, it should come right on. When the gig is over, instead of turning it off, I'll just unplug it. It worked fine like that today and this is just a temporary solution until the real case comes in.

This case is awesome and I have never had a problem with it. It is heavy with the 16X8X100' Audio Snake, 2 Dual 15 Band Eq's, DBX Driverack PA+, Furman Rack Rider, Alesis DM5, and OSP 3 Space Drawer. Probably weighing in at 200 pounds. The snake makes connections so much faster, even if I have the rack at the stage. Everything is still connected. I just pull out about 10 feet of the snake to the amps and plug everything into the snake box.

I keep my 16.4.2 in the case 24/7 in extreme heat 110 degrees to 10 degrees with freezing drizzle. The PreSonus SL has worked flawlessly.

BOClark,
Thanks for your reply! Yes, that is a reallyyyyyy nice case my man! I'm glad to hear that your StudioLive has been surviving just fine living in your trailor thru all kinds of extreme weather. I wish more people would post positive things instead of always reading bad things here.

I also have a 16x8x100 audio snake. Mine is on a snake reel with casters so it's a breeze to just roll it into the gig. Yeah, it would be nice if I could leave it connected to the StudioLive all the time like you, but it's alright. I don't mind connecting it at the gig. My rig is 100% active so I don't have any amp racks to lug around. I really like that.

In December 2009, I spent $12,000 on upgrading my sound equipment. Between laptop, EQs, PreSonus 16.4.2, Crown Amps, DBX Driverack, and new Yamaha Speakers. And a realy nice present for myself! I wished I would have waited and went active. QSC was prmoting heavily on the KSeries speakers then phased outbthe series quickly tom the New KW series. Then an explosion of active speakers hit...EV, Yamaha, Mackie, and QSC. Every month someone was coming out with a new and improved version of their own speaker. Or it seemed!
The older I get and after a major surgery, I am now considering selling my amps, monitors, speakers, and Subwoofers for a simple LIGHT WEIGHT active system.

I hear ya! I've been trying to downscale over the past couple of years now. Amp racks are no fun! I even picked up one of the new Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 amps for my bass rig. 4 lbs and works great for jazz and theatre gigs and rehearsals.

I've been using a Gator case for my 1642 for the past couple of years. It's tough, well padded inside, and the rear panel is accesible with it sitting in the bottom of the case. It generally travels with me in my CRV. The case has a handle and wheels, but it's so light I generally carry it suitcase style.

I completely understand that statement. I am a one man operation so whatever I can do to make my load lighter, I'm all for it.

On another note, my Odyssey case arrived today! YAY!!! So looks like I won't need my old case as a workaround this Friday at all now.

Today has been a great day so far! I'll take a pic of my new baby in her new case and post it in here when I'm done.
