Hi,

I m new to APC40 and I just found out that my Serato SL1 wont work. I already have Firestudio mobile - does anyone know how can I hook this up to a mixer? Is it even possible? Somehow I need to connect APC40, laptop, and mixer. Please help me!

Thanks,

Zita

Hi Zita,

Could you tell us a bit about what you need routed to what? The common and simple connection is to run a stereo pair from the main outputs of each into the mixer but I have this weird feeling that is not what you need in this case.

It all depends on what you are trying to achieve. I'm assuming you want to have two stereo signals running to a DJ mixer so you can mix on the mixer? And trigger clips / loops etc with the APC? What you could do is use the main output as your first stereo signal and the headphone output of the FireStudio Mobile as your second there source. You'll need a cable that running from stereo 1/4" jack to 2x mono 1/4 jack. I'm assuming you'll be using the headphone output on the mixer for your monitoring?

When you are actually mixing inside the box, you can just hook up the main out of the FSM to the mixer.

Hi,

Thanks for replying back! Usually the set up at the clubs I m playing is:
DJM 800 Pioneer mixer (that has a bunch of wires already coming out from the back that hooks up to the club's sound system).

The only place where I can hook things into is channel 1,2,3, or 4 phono or line with the RC (red and white cables). You have to excuse my layman terms - I m more musical then technical =)

In the past I would hook up serato SL1 box to mixer and to my laptop and then use CDJs.

The new set up I was envisioning was going to be no CDJs. Only mixer, laptop, and APC40 - and of course the "Something" that connects it all. I was told I can do this with a Serato SL3 box but I was hoping I can put my trusty Firestudio Mobile.

Any thoughts? Your input is highly appreciated.

Hi again Zita,

You're actually doing what I used to do back when I did Mobile DJ work.

Here's your routing
APC40--USB--Laptop (load the drivers for it and it will do the rest)
FS Mobile--FireWire--Laptop

Software,
Whatever you use it will have some sort of routing capability for your audio.
Set it to use line output 3-4 for one deck and 5-6 for the other. Just use 1/4' TS to RCA cables (keep them short) to connect to the mixer.

Tell it to use the APC40 for a controller (most newer software already have its mapping built in and if not then a Google search will likely find you someone who has mapped it for your software)

I'm not sure how to deal with your headphone routing. Most likely you can use the hardware capabilities built into your mixer.

Hope that helps.

Unless I'm mistaken, with the FSM this would mean coming out analog from the headphone jack for one deck and digital on S/PDIF for the other. That doesn't seem right.

I had a quick look at the analog routing for the FSM. It showed main out/3-4/5-6/7-8.

I don't actually have one so I was going from what I read. If not for assignable outputs, then what the heck are those TRS ports on the back used for? They can't be for direct outs can they? I understood them to be DAW outputs.

The FireStudio Mobile only has three stereo outputs to choose from, the main out, the headphones and the S/PDIF.

It does however have 10 inputs (2 mic/instrument, 6 line and 2 digital S/PDIF)

GO AHEAD...CALL ME AN IDIOT!

I misread the back connectors. I thought they were outputs.

This setup may not work. The only thing I can think now is if the software allows splitting the outputs as single mono sources. Or keep them as is and do all the mixing and crossfading inside the computer. Send the main outputs to the hardware mixer as a single stereo pair and route the headphones either directly from the FS Mobile to cans or into the mixer if it has a separate bus for heaphone/ monitoring routing.

ROFL!

This type of setup won't work. It would be wayyyy too convoluted.

If you want to DJ with an APC 40, take the plunge and get Ableton Live. Then you can just use the Main Outs of the FSM to a single channel on the mixer and do all your mixing inside Ableton. I perform this way several times a month. it requires a bit more setup on the front end, but your performances will be well worth all that pre-work. If you need more info on how to set up Ableton for this purpose, Youtube has tons of videos on the subject.

Cheers,

Jason

Currently building a DJ setup for my wife, including Torq and a Allen&Heath Xone: DX. But we've been looking into Ableton solutions as well. In the end the straight DJ setup will work better for her. Although I might take the plunge and go for a more loop base setup if and when I decide to take it on the road as well

If you are using Ableton + APC 40 + Firestudio Mobile the setup is quite easy:

Connect the APC to its power supply and USB to your computer.

Install the latest driver (from our website) and then Connect the FSMobile to your computer via firewire.

Connect the FSMobile to the DJ mixer from the Main Outputs.

Run Ableton.

For a template that is used by many many DJ's around the world go to:

www.illgates.com

its 50$, but well worth it if you don't want to get into programming Ableton yourself.

Cheers,

Jason
