My first gig a couple weeks ago was trial by fire. There were 10 bands booked over the weekend, and there I was with my shiny new 24.4.2. To be honest, I just wanted to get mic signals in one end, and sound out of the other. Happy to say the SL performed better than expected and was a real joy to use. Everyone was happy with the mix, the bands were happy with the monitor mixes etc etc.

All was good.

A week went by, I wanted to hook up my Mac Mini, but when I did, I had to upgrade the firmware. Hmmmm to upgrade or no. On the one hand, the mixer was working fine. On the other hand, I wanted to try VSL and Capture and all the goodies. So I went for it. Everything worked out fine, and I was up and running.

Played around with VSL a bit, and was ready for this weekends gig. The expected 4 piece band ended up being a duo, but I was able to record them with ease. Listened back to the soundcheck real quick, and it was flawless. Just about to set everything up and see about mixing it down. (2 guitars, 2 vocals) should be a good way to ease into all that.

Next gig on the 20th, and then the 22nd. 3 bands for each night, I plan on recording one band for sure out of them all.

Again, loving the setup!!!

I'm more of a live guy. Haven't done much recording, aside from me playing acoustic covers, with like 10 part harmonies. I really like the VSL, the EQ section is a great aid in visualizing whats going on, what the different knobs do, vs twiddling blindly until it "sounds good" I'm getting better at thinking "hmmm maybe if I added more of this, or less of that. Thinking of the whole range on the EQ, rather than just "more bass" or "less mids" for example. Instead of just "less mids" I can hone in on an area. I also love being able to play with the limiters, compressors etc at my leisure, as practice, instead of trying crazy ideas during the gig.

A definitely usefull tool!!!

So yeah, the recording features are a bonus and a new direction for me. Looking forward to the full meal deal on the 20th!!

I admit I was a bit hesitant about the board, hearing 3rd party rumors of troubles etc etc. So I'm hoping people want to hear some positive accounts of the boards out there being used! I'm about as green as they get when it comes to digital mixers, so maybe that will help sway someone unsure as well.

P.S. An iPad is definitely on the list. It's not at the top of the list, but it's pretty close.
