Using the FSM might proof to be very tricky as you only have a single stereo output (or you'll need to use the SPDIF). But usually you would use pipeline. It allows you to set the output and input channels and you can use the ping function to determine the latency that is introduced by the whole round trip and compensate for it.

Actually the FSM has 4 analogue outputs - the headphone socket has two channels on a separate bus. So you can send your signal from there using Pipeline and don't have to use the SPDIF outputs.

Wow, I catch Motoko being wrong about something, this is a rare day indeed

Well, technically I'm wasn't really wrong, but I seem to forget the headphone output today. I just had a discussion on a different board about an outboard compressor on a TASCAM 144 in which I also forget the headphone socket.

You can indeed get a stereo to 2x mono jack cable and use that as output and then back in trough the line level inputs...

Could someone make a detailed video on using and setting up pipeline. I cannot find anything on the web about it.I want to do some external compression for example. I have pipeline mono on a single vocal track output to my fireface 800 and run into my distressor. Out of the distressor back into the fireface and then into S1. I am getting good signal through piprline to compressor and back into S1. But now im stuck how do I use what I now have setup. Sorry guys this kind of routing is something I have never done but wanted to for some time.

Thanks

I'll see if I can get some external hardware that I can use and do a video within a couple of days.

Thanks Motoko that would be of great help. I am trying to add compression to a mono vocal track at the moment I set a buss for the track but it is stereo no mono can a mono buss be made? I found this post on the forum but it is for a stereo Drum Track Buss.

http://forumsarchive.presonus.com/posts/list/5125.page

I followed the steps and am getting good signal to the compressor and back to S1. But I still am not sure I am doing this correctly. I sent bill a message and I am awaiting a reply. I have to set the pan on the plugin hard lefy or I get and echoing. If I set it hard right I get a terrable feedback. When adjusting for max compression at 20:1 (Nuke) and Threshold at a reduction on the metering of -26db of gain I hear no noticable compression. However before setting a buss I applyed the plugin directly to the track insert. Then routed that track to a new one and recorded the output. As I adjusted compression ratio and threshold I could see it was work on recorded track wave form. There was also a problem with latency on the newly recorded track and the vocal was then out of sinc with the rest of the song. Ok Thanks and your help is Much Appreciated!

Why would you set up a bus to compress a vocal unless you're specifically going for NY-style parallel compression? Just use pipeline as an insert effect, it's really not that hard to figure out. The real problem with S1 atm (IMO) is, that there isn't a workflow optimized way to bounce/freeze the external hardware effect, you have to export a stem. But setting up pipeline is really easy, assign input and output of your hardware and manually adjust the additional latency with the ping function.

The idea of the pipeline plug is that you can patch your external hardware and use it as a plugin. It seems your approach is way to complicate. Looking at your gear list, I reckon you should know how to use a compressor. Just use pipeline as you would any VST compressor and patch your distressor into the pipeline plug.

And setting up the bounce is fairly easy to, just solo the track, hit Ctrl+E and you have the export stem dialog, make sure you tick the import into song box and you should be fine after clicking OK.

I'm aware of that, that's why I wrote it wasn't work flow optimized.
And that I find to be more true everyday I have to work with this sloooow way of S1 handling this.

He he... Although it's not so slow compared to the other DAWs and their features in this area, having a simple 'print' function would be nice.

I normally use my hardware during tracking and yes I am aware of how to use a compressor just fine Thank You! However I have never attempted to do a Hardware Insert and this was a TEST! I set up a Bus because thats what the man said to do if you look at the link I posted you will see his instructions for using a hardware compressor for Drums. I then assumed that this was the correct way to run a Hardware Insert To Any Track or set of Tracks. What I choose to use the insert for is my decision not your's. When I add the pipeline as you suggest as a VST on the insert of the channel it seems to work now that I have done some re-routing in RME Totalmix and S1.
