RTAS is not the bee's knees.
Is there really a noticeable amount of people here who are struggling with the VST / AU options?
And you're not going to convert a non-TDM PT user over, when their favorite RTAS plugin has been natively supported by PT this whole time.... at lease not for a while......

Would you seriously use an RTAS version of EXS24 if it existed ?? Hell No!

I'd much rather see AVID and Apple drop their proprietary plugin format and support VST because VST is IT. There are a thousand reasons I could care less about anything but VST.

Not sure sure that I agree. I think it's possible that Avid may still support RTAS but I would not be surprised at all to see Pro Tools support VST and drop further RTAS developement in the next version (This of course assuming they are able to obtian licensing rights from Steinberg).

Just my opinions, but I think there is some merit to them:

-There are already a couple years worth of 64 bit plug-in developement in the VST format. Pro Tools has yet to make the 64 bit leap and I think it would be tough for Pro Tools to be the only platform which runs RTAS to have what will surely be a meager offering of 64 bit RTAS plug-ins for quite some time.

-My understanding for the reason that Pro Tools does not offer offline bounce is that it is a limitation of the RTAS format. Avid should be embarassed/ashamed that in 2011 with quad core, 2+ ghz CPU's now common place in the market, the "Industry Standard" STILL has us bouncing in real time. It's rediculous.

-RTAS is a pig. Most plugs that I own in both RTAS and VST formats seem to require much more CPU in the RTAS version.

-If there ever existed a format war between RTAS, VST, and AU, VST should be declared the winner! If not because it's better, than at least because it's the most universal.

We'll see if Pro Tools 10 delivers VST support. If it does not, I can say with certainty that I will abandon PT. As much as I like PT, it frustrates me that it is such a CPU hog. I can easily place 4 times the amount of 32 bit VST plugs in S1 than I can RTAS in PT.

PT 10 will be (apparently) 64-bit according to the tech preview video floating around. As to RTAS... (just asking because I don't know)... is it the case that it can "only" do real time processing or is that just the name of it?

I mean... plug-in standards can be updated just like any other software so it's not beyond my imagination that the RTAS format can be updated (if it's somehow completely prohibited now, dunno) to do offline processing at some point in the future.

I always thought the main reason that PT LE (now PT9) didn't do offline is because their flagship (being hardware of course) cant do it... no matter what plug-in format you use with HD. Like mixing with a digital mixer... it always has to run in realtime.

So my assumption was that you won't see anything in their native product that the flagship product isn't capable of.

BTW... there are rumours floating around that Avid's next hardware workstation line may be based on Euphonics DSP... whatever chips the Euphonics consoles use internally... since (I think) they bought Euphonics.

I'd be happy if their rtas plugs went vst as well, but I for one wouldn't bitch if Presonus found a way to include rtas inside PS2,and we're able to make their plugs bounce offline.

just my 2cts.

ADM3 ,
I totally agree with your point about Pro Tools plugs being resource hogs! That is one of the reasons I chucked it (Pro Tools 9). Avid is also slow as molasses with supporting new OS's like Lion!

Are you kidding?? Wow. I have been offline bouncing for a decade and ProTools still doesn't offer this feature? I think this is an essential feature for a modern DAW, especially one that likes to call itself industry standard.
